A Haven in the Heights – Makaha Mauna Olu Estates

Homebuilding at Mauna Olu Estates has continued to move forward by starts and stops since the first home-sites were offered for sale in the late 1980s. Currently, 67 homes have been built and three are in various stages of construction in the Makaha Vallley gated community, which consists of 111 one-to-two-acre country-zoned lots.

Accessed from Farrington Highway via Makaha Valley Road and approximately two miles up the valley, the subdivision was a component of the masterplan for Makaha Valley created in the 1960s by developer Chinn Ho who built his own home on an adjacent property. He recognized the area as favored in terms of its natural beauty and climate.

Although Leeward Oahu is generally dryer than other parts of the island, the valley has sufficient rainfall to support vegetation and at the higher elevations can be five to ten degrees cooler than the coast.

Among the appealing features of Mauna Olu are its low density due to the size of the lots and the spectacular views from elevations ranging from approximately 500 to 1,000 feet. With mountains on three sides, the home-sites look out to the ocean and back into the picturesque valley. All have roadway frontage. The infrastructure, with four miles of private roads, is maintained by the Mauna Olu Estates Owners’ Association. Round-the-clock security is provided at the gated entrance to the community.

A variety of recreational opportunities are available in the area, including golf at the Makaha Valley Country Club East Course, an 18 hole public golf course. Sandy beaches, including the world-famous Makaha surfing beach, Turtle Beach with waters generally calm enough for swimming, and Pokai Bay Beach Park are just minutes away. Kapolei with its numerous options for shopping and dining as well as essential services is an approximately half-hour drive.
