A Haven in the Heights – Pacific Heights
Pacific Heights, one of Honolulu’s oldest hillside neighborhoods, has become a unique mix of vintage homes, remodels, and contemporary designs. Homes considered historically important due to original ownership or architecture have been placed on State and National Registers of Historic Places. Although many of the original kamaaina estates have been subdivided, century-old trees and gardens have often been preserved, contributing to the neighborhood’s appeal.
Many of the estates were the residences of families linked to the economic and political history of turn-of-the-century and early 20th century Hawaii. The homes were built on sites overlooking the centers of commerce, downtown Honolulu, and the harbor. Situated between Pauoa and Nuuanu Valleys, Pacific Heights also provides panoramic views of the verdant valleys and much of Oahu’s southeastern coastline from Diamond Head to Barbers Point. The heights were favored then, as now, not only for the views but for the cool, breezy weather. From a point just above the Pali Highway, Pacific Heights Road winds up the hillside to connect with neighborhood streets and cul-de-sacs that reach an elevation of more than 800 feet.
Today Pacific Heights showcases architectural styles ranging from traditional “Old Hawaii” to contemporary. Buyers of older homes take advantage of the opportunity for “creative remodeling,” further enhancing the unique neighborhood.
Sasha Mason (RA), a sales agent with Keller Williams Honolulu, has recently listed a completely remodeled four bedroom, four bath, two story home at 2889 Pacific Heights Road at $1,548,000. In addition to the 2,390-squarefoot main living area, augmented by a 300-square-foot lanai, the home includes a 400-square-foot separate apartment on the lower level. The 10,271-square-foot property also includes a two-car garage, plus generous driveway parking. The landscaped grounds and gardens of the original home, built in 1954, have been preserved and are among the features that attracted Mason and her investor client to the project. Elegantly renovated, the home has been opened up to sweeping ocean and downtown views.
“The original home had the 1950s charm, but like so many homes of this era did not utilize the potential of the space. Seeing this potential, we took the opportunity to bring a home back to life,” Mason said.
“Renovations involved removing solid walls and installing glass sliding doors and large windows throughout to allow natural light to enhance the modern beauty within. Lifeproof vinyl plank flooring, custom designed ceramic tile surfaces, beautiful wood accent walls, and natural wood support beams are design features of the upstairs main living area with its wide open floor plan. Also on this level are three very generous-size bedrooms that include large closets and three custom-designed bathrooms with beautiful tile, a soaking jacuzzi tub, and extra large rainfall showers. The all new kitchen has custom acrylic soft close cabinets, high-end appliances, and natural quartz counter space. The completely separate downstairs one-bedroom apartment or in-law quarters also includes custom detailing. That extra downstairs space is another feature highly desirable here in Oahu, allowing for multi-generational living or rental income.
“The exterior of the home has great curb appeal. The yard is fully landscaped with flowering puakenikeni trees, palms, and a large grassy area, perfect for a family with children. The back of the property is where the true magic begins with the large patio providing a wonderful area for barbecue or potential location for a hot tub. As you ascend the stairs to the top of the terraced property you will discover an unobstructed view from Punchbowl to Pearl Harbor and beyond. There you can experience panoramic sunsets all year long. At the top of the property you will also find mature fruiting citrus trees, mandarins, lemons, and lime. There is also a large avocado tree that would make the perfect location for a gazebo to sit and enjoy the exceptional natural landscape and views.
“Working with Our Home Investments LLC as a team, we have been able to truly transform and bring homes back to life. It’s amazing and fulfilling. When remodeling it is of up-most importance to not cut corners, to address issues, and make safety a priority We are in this business of Real Estate to enhance lives and to create beautiful Island homes at a reasonable cost. Pacific Heights has been one of my favorite projects to date. I truly love the home, its layout and modern family feel. It will make a great home soon for another Ohana.”
An open house will be held this Sunday, July 7, from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information or to make an appointment for a showing, contact Sasha Mason (RA) at 808-745-6366 or email@example.com.
