A Haven in the Heights – Waialae Iki
Waialae Iki is sometimes referred to as “the neighborhood designed for people who take views seriously.” Clearly the intention of the developers of this East Oahu hillside neighborhood was to create subdivisions that would support construction of upscale view homes in the future. Waialae Iki evolved in five increments from a few hundred feet above Kalanianaole Highway to an elevation of approximately 1,100 feet in the gated community that tops off the development on Wiliwilinui Ridge.
Contoured roads and cul-desacs maximize views for the homes, which, variously, overlook the southeast coast of Oahu, the ocean, and Diamond Head. All five increments showcase the work of Hawaii’s leading developers, architects, and builders.
The first four developments, Waialae Iki I, II, III, and IV, include 625 homes, which have the option of membership in the Waialae Iki Ridge Community Association, organized in 1976 and responsible for oversight of the security patrol. The gated community, Waialae Iki V with 286 homes, maintains its own community association.
The lower increments, with lots starting at a minimum of 7,500 square feet, are accessed by Laukahi and numerous spur roads, loops, and cul de sacs branching off to the east and west of the ridge, creating mini neighborhoods with lots of various sizes and configurations. Parks with exotic plants and walking paths are located on the 1500 and 1700 blocks of Laukahi, which, together with the well maintained roadside plantings, contribute to the ambiance of an upscale community.
A unique multi-level home on Ihiloa Loop in Waialae Iki III has been listed by Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties Realtor Geri Lambert. Built in 1974 and remodeled and upgraded over the years, the home was designed by Johnson and Reese, a distinguished architecture firm of the period.
Situated on a 8,133-square-foot gently sloping lot, the home captures views of the ocean, coastline, and Waialae Country Club golf course from all three levels.
Among its numerous distinctive design features is the use of hardwoods in both exterior and interior finishes. Cedar siding is complemented by a wood shake roof. The nearly 2,000-square-foot interior showcases both natural redwood paneling and Australian eucalyptus flooring.
The sense of spaciousness of interior living areas is enhanced by a dramatic open beam ceiling and an abundance of windows and sliding glass doors that bring the outside in. A Stephen White “light sculpture,” suspended from the vaulted ceiling, adds a touch of elegance.
“This special home is conveniently located about midway up the hill on tranquil Ihiloa Loop, just high enough to capture stunning views without a long winding drive,” Lambert said. “The home is very functional. The living room, large open kitchen, family room, half bath, and an office/den are on the main floor. The upgraded kitchen flows to the dining area with sliding doors to the deck on two sides and expansive views to the horizon. Two bedrooms, including the master suite with a view of Diamond Head from the step-out balcony, two bathrooms, and an office that can be converted back into a third bedroom are on the second floor. On the ground level, are a 50-foot swimming pool, hot tub, and a covered lanai which provides additional space for casual dining and entertaining.
“The front door entry at street level opens to the dramatic two-story ceiling. A split stairway goes up to bedrooms and down to the main floor landing, which opens to the living room and views. On the other side of the house, the street level garage door entry opens to the family room/half bath and kitchen.
“The current owners, who treasured the house, made extensive improvements and upgrades, particularly in the kitchen and baths with marble and granite finishes and new fixtures. The shake roof and skylights were newly installed in 2017. Blinds and the chandelier, which is a work of art, are included in the price.”
Lambert has listed the home at $1,737,000 and is showing it by appointment and at open houses. For information or to arrange a showing, contact Geri Lambert at 349-5260 or gerilambert808@gmail. com. Open House today from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
