Coastal Options – Southeastern Oahu – Diamond Head

The southeastern coast of Oahu, bracketed by Koko Head in the east and Diamond Head the west, claims some of Hawaii’s most desirable and valuable real estate.

Development along this approximately 10 mile stretch of scenic coastline, almost exclusively residential, includes primarily single family homes, a few townhome communities, and a cluster of highrise condominiums at the edge of Waikiki. A hotel, country club, golf course, and two private beach clubs constitute the only additional development. Numerous parks provide acres of open space along the coast and within the communities.

The first permanent or primary residences began replacing vacation cottages on beachfront lots nearly a century ago. Kamaaina families with primary homes in the valleys and on the heights were attracted by the sunny weather and clear, calm waters of Maunalua Bay. Today distinctive estates set the tone for upscale living in neighborhoods from Portlock to Diamond Head.

Over the years, southeastern Oahu oceanfront neighborhoods have continued to reinvent themselves, retaining value despite negative market fluctuations and offering renewed opportunity for local and offshore builders, buyers, and investors.

An oceanfront estate at the foot of Diamond Head — a rare offering — is currently available from The Choi Group with Hawaii Life Real Estate.

A classic kamaaina residence on more than 15,000 square feet of fee simple, R-7.5-zoned land with 85 linear feet of beach frontage has recently been listed for $18.8 million.

Located at the bottom of a hidden drive off Diamond Head Road near Kuilei Cliffs Beach Park, the 3,108-square-foot, two-story home was built in 1941 and extensively rebuilt in 2004 by Armstrong Builders. The elegantly landscaped property includes a detached cottage and art studio.

“This is a true island-style home with indoor and outdoor spaces that capture the essence of ‘old Hawaii,'” said Realtor and listing agent Julianna Garris.

She noted that the property is walled around the perimeter, including a protective seawall with a gate that leads to the sandy beach and ocean with numerous popular surf breaks and swimming holes.

“Considering its privacy, beauty, and choice location, this estate is truly an exceptional offering,” Garris said.

The three-bedroom, four-bath home features hardwood flooring, crown molding, and pocketing glass doors that offer unobstructed ocean and garden views from the living and dining areas. The master suite on the second floor is a luxurious retreat with vaulted ceilings, a covered ocean-facing lanai, and walk-in closet with numerous built-ins.

Other amenities include recessed lighting, split air conditioning, ceiling fans, high-end kitchen and laundry appliances, drapes, a security system, and automated garage door.
