Coastal Options – Southeastern Oahu – Hawaii Kai Marina
The southeastern coast of Oahu, bracketed by Koko Head in the east and Diamond Head the west, claims some of Hawaii’s most desirable and valuable real estate.
Development along this approximately 10 mile stretch of scenic coastline, almost exclusively residential, includes primarily single family homes, a few townhome communities, and a cluster of highrise condominiums at the edge of Waikiki. A hotel, country club, golf course, and two private beach clubs constitute the only additional development. Numerous parks provide acres of open space along the coast and within the communities.
The first permanent or primary residences began replacing vacation cottages on beachfront lots nearly a century ago. Kamaaina families with primary homes in the valleys and on the heights were attracted by the sunny weather and clear, calm waters of Maunalua Bay. Today distinctive estates set the tone for upscale living in neighborhoods from Portlock to Kahala.
Over the years, southeast Oahu oceanfront neighborhoods have continued to reinvent themselves, retaining value despite negative market fluctuations and offering renewed opportunity for local and offshore builders, buyers, and investors.
Along the shores of Maunalua Bay, miles of oceanfront communities stretch from Diamond Head in the west to Koko Head in the east. Another option for oceanfront living is offered by the Hawaii Kai Marina, Oahu’s only real marina neighborhood incorporating residential, commercial, and recreational components.
Currently available from East Oahu Realty is a choice Marina listing, a four-bedroom, four-bath home with two boat docks. Priced at $1.6 million, the spacious 2,352-square-foot home was built in 1988 and extensively remodeled in 2011. The 7,080-square-foot waterfront lot is landscaped and includes a sprinkler system, mature plumeria trees, and a rock wall.
Primarily single-level, the home features a 450-square-foot upstairs wing with one of two waterfront master suites, his and hers closets, a spa-like bathroom, a custom home office, and lanai with a broad view of Koko Head, the landscaped property, and marina panorama. Amenities include split ACs in each bedroom, the kitchen, office, and a garage with full bath and split AC unit that currently doubles as a “man cave. Six cars can be parked on the property.
“The marina-front location is a boat lover’s dream, and awesome for surfers too, since it has quick access to the ocean and a number of favorite surf breaks along the southeast Oahu coast.” said listing agent Malia Johle (RA). “The current owners chose the location and spent $350,000 on remodeling and improvements to create
comfortable and functional family home.”
“The marina offers a great waterfront lifestyle,” she added, “with three of the shopping centers accessible from guest boat docks, so you can drive your boat to Costco, the grocery store, restaurants, movies, the gym, coffee shops, yoga studios and all of the other great Hawaii Kai amenities. Also, the home is near the entrance to Hawaii Kai, so you can avoid the neighborhood traffic snarl and gain quick access to the highway heading toward Downtown Honolulu … or Hanauma Bay, the beaches, and golf courses in the other direction.”
Johle is hosting an open house today, Sunday, Nov. 4, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the property, located at 263 Hakalau Place. For more information, call Johle at (808) 277-8232, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
