Coastal Options – Southeastern Oahu – Kahala Kua
One of East Honolulu’s newer gated communities, Kahala Kua is located at the top of Poola Street on the eastern side of Wiliwilinui Ridge. Development of the subdivision began in 1984 and was completed in 1995.
The entry gate is approximately one mile up Poola Street, which winds up the hill from Waialae Iki Park to an elevation of approximately 800 feet above sea level. The neighboring community of Waialae Iki tops the ridge at more than 1,000 feet.
Upscale homes occupy most of the lots, but a few are still vacant.
Features of the Kahala Kua community are cool breezes, underground utilities, and excellent views. Most properties overlook the ocean, Wailupe Peninsula, and Koko Head, and a few catch Diamond Head over the slopes of Waialae Iki. Depending on their location on the hill and orientation, some homes enjoy sunrise, sunset, and Neighbor Island views. Builders are required to observe design guidelines, ensuring architectural quality and protection of view channels.
Locations Realtor and Partner Dolores Bediones has recently listed a spacious, three-story view home at 5520 Poola Street at $2,150,000. The six-bedroom, six-bath home has a roofed living area of 6,181 square feet. Built in 2002 on a 21,926-square-foot lot, the home remains in “excellent condition,” according to Bediones, who noted that it has potential for multi-generational living due to its size and layout. An outdoor recreation area and patio are located on an upper level of the property and a studio bedroom and bath on the ground level. The back portion of the property abuts preservation land, contributing to its sense of privacy .
Solidly built, the concrete and steel structure features tile roofing and marble and granite flooring. The interior layout was designed both to take advantage of views and create privacy for various parts of the household. Main living and dining areas and the master bedroom overlook the ocean and mountains. A 971square-foot garage provides space for three cars.
Bediones, who was one of the first residents of the new hillside development, has represented 30 buyers and sellers in Kahala Kua over the years. “With only 120 homes, Kahala Kua is a very friendly, intimate neighborhood,” she said. “The Association fee covers security and common areas, which are well maintained. The location is also very convenient, with Kahala Mall and the entrance to the freeway just a short drive down the hill.”
