Enjoying life at the top Honolulu Penthouses
By Lisa Lee
No other property says that you’ve made it to the top better than
“penthouse.” The word is a brand in itself.
The penthouse was first developed in New York in the 1920s, when new wealth and a high demand for city living led to the development of separate, luxurious, multiple-floored “houses” that were specially constructed on the roofs of apartment buildings.
For today’s high-end client, the penthouses in Honolulu are unlike those in most cities. In addition to a bird’s-eye view of the jeweled cityscape, Honolulu’s penthouses boast panoramas that take in the ocean, glowing sunsets, iconic Diamond Head and the lush beauty of Oahu’s mountain ranges.
Why do people choose a penthouse over a luxury home or estate?
“Convenience, location and awesome views,” says Marshall C. Mower, a partner and REALTOR at Prudential Locations who specializes in luxury condominiums and fine homes. “When you can live in the heart of the city and have easy access to everything, including beautiful beaches, shopping, entertainment and great restaurants, it can be a wonderful lifestyle.”
Penthouses offer a unique style of luxury living in Hawaii. “In a penthouse, you’re on top of the world, yet close to everything,” Mower explains.
“Honolulu’s luxury high-rise condominiums have world-class and resort-like amenities including swimming pools, spacious exercise facilities, movie theaters and outdoor recreation areas. Twenty four-hour state-ofthe-art security systems give you the freedom to leave the island, enjoy vacation and not worry about your home while you’re away.”
Some buyers turn to a penthouse as a way to down-size from their larger homes. They want to lose the headache of maintaining a large home, but don’t want to sacrifice space and luxury. With a penthouse, they can achieve what they desire in a home and benefit from the convenience and security of being in a condominium complex.
“Penthouses and luxury condominiums offer everything you would expect in a fine home: high ceilings, gorgeous kitchens, luxurious baths, custom cabinetry, exotic flooring and quality finishes throughout. In most cases they have floor-to-ceiling windows and spacious lanais that showcase their incredible views.”
Mower offers one of his new listings as an example: “It’s a stunning penthouse in Kakaako in Keola Lai – the perfect location for someone who works in or wants to be near Downtown Honolulu. It has panoramic 360-degree views of the ocean, the mountains, sunrise, sunset and beautiful Honolulu city lights at night – and it has a spacious lanai for entertaining.” Built in 2008, Keola Lai has a host of amenities and it is a pet-friendly building.
There are 20 penthouses currently listed for fee simple sales in Honolulu, according to MLS data. They range in price from $265,000 to $9.8 million.
