Ensuring Fair Housing For All

April 2018 will mark the 50th anniversary of the landmark Fair Housing Act. REALTOR associations across our state will join REALTOR boards across the nation to commemorate this milestone and raise awareness about fair housing issues.

As an association of more than 6,500 members, the Honolulu Board of REALTORS (HBR) advocates for homeownership rights as well as industry ethics and professionalism. HBR’s membership includes licensed real estate brokers, agents and property managers who pledge to protect the individual right of real estate ownership and widen the opportunity to enjoy it.

REALTORS ensure fairness

The REALTOR Code of Ethics reflects the high standards of business practice that the public can expect of REALTORS . Article 10 of the Code of Ethics outlines a REALTOR ‘s duty to the public: “REALTORS shall not deny equal professional services to any person for reasons of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation or gender identity. REALTORS shall not be parties to any plan or agreement to discriminate against a person or persons on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Board of REALTORS . “This tenet rings true in our state where there is so much cultural diversity that adds to the richness of our communities and makes Hawaii a great place to live.”

The impact of fair housing

Fair housing helps to make homeownership a reality for many people. Owning a home provides more than just shelter and security. It promotes a healthy economy, fosters participation in local communities, and inspires the upkeep and improvement of properties. Homeowner-ship also defines communities and aids in developing a strong sense of place.

Where people live has a direct impact on the quality of their health, education and access to economic opportunities. Fair housing supports the development of diverse communities and quality of life. During the yearlong commemoration, the National Association of REALTORS will further examine community fair housing issues and advocate for changes to the Fair Housing Act to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

WHAT IS THE FAIR HOUSING ACT?

The Fair Housing Act of 1968 is a federal law that prohibits discriminatory practices that make housing unavailable to people based on their race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin. It is intended to safeguard people in these protected classes from unlawful practices by landlords, real estate companies, banks and lenders, and homeowners insurance companies in the buying, renting, selling or financing process.
