Hawaii’s Heavenly Heights
Eighth in a series
The masterplanned Hawaii Kai community fulfills the vision of developer Henry J. Kaiser for a neighborhood with a residential mix that would comprise every basic home style in a wide price range, from affordable to upscale. Today, with the masterplan essentially built out, Hawaii Kai consists of single family homes throughout the valley, on the hillsides, and fronting the Marina, townhome complexes, and condominium apartment buildings.
The visionary industrialist turned real estate developer recognized that the topography of the eastern corner of Oahu was made to order for a diversified development of both oceanfront and view homes. By dredging the Hawaii Kai Marina, he created a variety of sites for waterfront homes. The ridges that embrace the Hawaii Kai valleys and Marina, Kaluanui to the west and Kamehame to the east, became the sites of the community’s two major ridge-line subdivisions, Mariner’s Ridge and Kamehame Ridge topped by Na Pali Haweo.
Dan Madden, a Realtor at East Oahu Realty, is a resident of Mariner’s Ridge where he has sold 53 homes. “I moved to Mariner’s Ridge 14 years ago because of the great views and cool breezes – it’s usually a few degrees cooler than at sea level. It takes only a few minutes to get down the hill to my office at the Hawaii Kai Corporate Plaza.
“Between 1972 and 1975 approximately 275 single family homes were built on the lower two thirds of Mariner’s Ridge by Robert H. Grant, a California developer. Five different floor plan designs took advantage of the sloping lots and excellent views. Later, 150 additional lots in the upper part of the ridge were made available to buyers who hired their own architects and built custom homes.”
Madden is currently listing a Mariner’s Ridge single family 3 bedroom, 2 bath, split level home situated on an 8,939 square foot rim lot overlooking Hawaii Kai, Koko Head, the ocean, and Diamond Head.
“This home has the best view on the ridge and captures both sunrises and sunsets,” Madden said. “The unobstructed ocean and coastal view is literally bracketed by Koko Head and Diamond Head. The bird’s eye view of Hawaii Kai and the marina is always fascinating, by day or night when the lights come on throughout the community. The lanai is a great place for enjoying the view and the ocean breezes… but major living areas also look out to the mountains and ocean.
“The open floor plan creates a sense of spaciousness, which is enhanced by the high vaulted ceilings and abundant windows.
The kitchen is really special with beautiful wood cabinetry, lots of counter and storage space and an island for casual dining. The kitchen was completely remodeled in 2011 and the bathrooms in 2007.
“Upgraded finishes include natural stone surfaces in both bathrooms, which include walk-in showers. The master suite, which is very private, is located at the lower level. In general, the home is quiet and private due to its orientation on the rim lot, which has ample space for an addition.
“The landscaped property includes a water feature at the rear of the house and a two-car garage.”
Madden is showing the home, which is priced at $1,375,000, by appointment and at open houses. The next open house is scheduled for Sunday, July 26, from 2 to 5 p.m.
