Architecturally impressive, Keola Lai occupies an entire block bounded by South, Queen, Emily, and Kawaiahao Streets on the border of Kakaako and Downtown. The objective of the developer, A&B Kakaako LLC, was to create a new condominium residence that would both enhance the neighborhood and provide a wide range of options for buyers. Designed by Media5 Architecture and built by Nordic Construction, the concrete, steel, and glass structure rises to 42 stories on a 2.69-acre site and includes 350 residential units, most of which offer views of the ocean, city, and mountains.

One, two, and three bedroom apartments with one, two, or two and a half baths, lanais of varying sizes, some with no lanais were priced from $350,000 to $950,000. The marketing program emphasized the quality of the amenities, which include a recreation deck on the fourth floor with a large, free form swimming pool, whirlpool, barbecue facilities, exercise room, recreation area with seating and tables, and five floors of parking for residents, guests, and patrons of the commercial spaces at street level. The convenience of the location within walking distance of Downtown and Restaurant Row was another selling point. Sales began in 2005 and most units were sold by 2008 when the project was completed.

The original owner of Penthouse 1 has listed the unit with Realtor Marshall C. Mower, a Partner and Fine Homes Specialist at Prudential Locations.

Mower describes the 2,235 square foot apartment with a 280 square foot lanai as a “mansion in the sky.” Priced at $2,150,000, the three bedroom, two and a half bath unit comes with three very large parking spaces.

“With its walls of glass and large open lanai this apartment provides an awesome, panoramic 360 degree view of the ocean, mountains, sunrise, sunset, and Honolulu city lights at night. You also have a ringside seat to observe activity in Honolulu Harbor,” Mower said.

There are several options for dining…a separate dining area adjacent to the kitchen, an eat-at counter, and the outdoor lanai which is an extension of the main living area accessed by sliding glass doors. Bathroom cabinets are also solid cherry wood and counters are granite. Two of the bathrooms have spacious walk-in showers and the master bath, which has a nice view, is also equipped with a large soaking tub. The third bedroom can also double as a home office or den.”
