The quality detailing of this exceptional Kahala home extends beyond the aesthetic to numerous high-tech features and conveniences. Owner Charles Wathen worked closely with architect Jim Schmit and designer Diane Cleve to create a home that is truly a showplace.

Teak doors and cabinetry, ceiling detailing, staircase, door, and window trim, as well as hand-carved decorative panels, add warmth and elegance to interior spaces. Wathen notes that he personally imported the teak from Bali and Jakarta. “Most of the teak is classified as ‘old teak.’ However, the flooring is ‘antique teak’ from a 200-year-old building in Jakarta. The rich tones of the teak complement the cooler marble, tile, and granite surfaces.”

A real estate developer and investor, Wathen razed an older home on the 11,250 square foot site in 2009 and began building his current home with the intention of creating a private, oasis-like environment. The tone is set by lush tropical gardens and fountains just inside the gated entry. The lower level of the 5,225 square foot home opens to a courtyard and what Wa-then describes as an “indoor/outdoor” swimming pool. The sense of spaciousness and seamless flow from the interior to the outdoor recreation areas and gardens is enhanced by 24 foot high ceilings and floor to ceiling retractable doors. The home succeeds on many levels…as a secure personal retreat and as a venue for entertaining guests and hosting large scale parties. The state-of-the-art kitchen with a 100 bottle wine cooler is augmented by an outdoor barbecue and second caterer’s kitchen accessible from loading areas in the motorcourt, driveway, and garage, which together provide parking for 10 cars.

The main home with 4 bedrooms and 5 full baths includes an exercise room, entertainment/theater room, an office, and separate guest quarters with an additional bedroom, bath, and kitchen.

“This is essentially a ‘smart house,'” Wathen said. “The smart home system controls high quality audio throughout, from room to room and outdoors. Indoor and outdoor lights are programmable and dimmable. All possible issues of security and communications have been addressed, including entry which can be regulated by fingerprints. One of our large closets can be closed off to create a safe room with its own generator and water supply. The system we are using is actually a commercial system similar to those utilized in government facilities. My wife Devra took care of all the high-tech features in the kitchen.
