Mehana master plan nears completion with Kahiku
Kahiku, a new neighborhood in D.R. Horton-Schuler Homes’ master-planned Mehana community in Kapolei, will start sales in July with 140 new townhomes. Forty of the units will be priced according to City and County affordable guidelines, and 100 will be sold at market rate, inclusive of 38 of the popular live-work units introduced by D. R. Horton-Schuler at its Awakea neighborhood.
The Kahiku townhomes will range in size from 1,036 square feet to 1,846 square feet with twoand three-bedroom units and fenced-in back yards. Two assigned parking spaces or enclosed garages will be included in the price of the units. Interior features include a full appliance package, including washer and dryer, blinds, and wall-to-wall carpeting in living rooms and bedrooms. A 10-year structural warranty comes with every home. D. R. Horton-Schuler Homes Vice President/Sales and Marketing Mary Flood noted that the live-work, or “flex units,” has proved to be one of the company’s most popular home designs. “This home style makes it possible for the owner to live upstairs and operate their business downstairs at ground level,” Flood said. “Zoning for these units is AMX2 and allows for a variety of uses. Some current businesses at our Awakea at Mehana neighborhood, which recently sold out, include an eye doctor, a psychologist and a hair salon. The lower floor can also be used as an Ohana unit.
“We also anticipate a strong demand for the Kahiku town-homes, particularly among young families,” she continued. “This new neighborhood is just a few blocks from the new Hookele Elementary School, which was built on property donated by D.R. Horton-Schuler Homes and scheduled to open this fall. Children will be able to walk to school without crossing any major streets. Hookele is a truly old-fashioned neighborhood school, but with a lot of the latest technology, including a wireless network throughout the campus. It will serve approximately 750 students.
“Just a block away from Kahiku is another new facility, that we’re very proud of. The Mehana Activity Center and community pool, which opened in May with a blessing and is being very much enjoyed by Mehana residents,” Flood said. “The Center includes a meeting/party room, bathrooms/dressing rooms and on-site manager’s office. A park with a two-block circumference is now in progress near the Activity Center.
“2015 is truly a banner year for Mehana with all the components and concepts of our master plan coming to fruition, including a second roadway access that will open in November. Mehana is maturing into one of Hawaii’s best family neighborhoods.”
