New Military Relocation Certification Course Offered For Realtors
Veterans United Home Loans Hawaii Branch Manager Tony Dias has been designated official instructor for the National Association of Realtors’ new Military Relocation Professional (MRP) Certification Course.
Dias will conduct the first course to be offered in Hawaii at the Honolulu Board of Realtors offices on 12th Avenue on Tuesday, July 8. Space is limited, so real estate professionals interested in signing up are urged to contact Kamalani Rodrigues at HBR (792-4939) as soon as possible.
The MRP Certification will be awarded to those who complete the course and pass the examination. Students will learn how to provide the real estate services—at any stage in the service member’s military career— that meet the needs of this niche market and win future referrals.
“Military Relocation Professionals will have access to an exclusive online network and referral system that will enable them to better serve our military members relocating in Hawaii,” Dias said. “The course material will provide specialists in military relocation with information on the special needs of military families, as well as a better understanding of how their VA benefits equate to the best terms in mortgage loans available today.
“The course will also help Realtors determine whether a military service member is a candidate for purchasing a home. It may not always make sense for a veteran to purchase…sometimes it is more to their advantage to live on base or to rent. It’s also important for Realtors to understand what kinds of properties are eligible for a VA mortgage…for example, condominiums have to meet certain requirements, and so do leasehold properties and even single family homes.
“One of the goals of this educational program is to ensure Realtors help veterans avoid the pitfalls of a property they may not be able to close on and save them the expense of a home inspection and appraisal.
“In the eight years that I’ve been presenting monthly seminars on VA Loan benefits for service members and the three years I’ve been offering courses statewide for real estate professionals, I’ve discovered that there is still much to be learned on both sides. A lot of people think they know everything about the VA Loan benefit and consequently don’t sign up for courses. When I conduct a Realtor seminar, I always ask if they learned anything new…invariably the tell me they were surprised to find out how much they didn’t know.
“As a prior service active duty U. S. Marine and dependent who changed schools 11 times in 13 years, it is my passion to make relocating easier for those who are serving…and finding the right home in a new and often unfamiliar territory can be one of the most stressful things they have to deal with. With this new course leading to the MRP certification, the National Association of Realtors is providing Realtors with a great opportunity to better serve our veterans.
“Various real estate agents and firms have their own procedures and methods of connecting with military moving to Hawaii from out of state. However, NAR created this certification to enable Hawaii Realtors to network with Realtors in other states who are also military relocation specialists.”
Dias noted that among the ways Veterans United connects with service members relocating to Hawaii is sponsorship of newcomer events at Schofield Barracks and Pearl Harbor/ Hickam Joint Base. At the events, Dias offers free VA Loan seminars to educate them not only about their benefit but also the Hawaii market in general.
