Extending approximately three miles along Maui’s southwest coast between Kihei and Makena, the resort-residential community of Wailea claims some of Hawaii’s best beaches and top-rated resorts. One of the island’s newer destinations, Wailea has continued to expand with upscale townhomes, condominiums, and single family homes sited along contoured roads landscaped with well-maintained tropical foliage and colorful bougainvillea.

The community is a mix of full-time residents, second home owners, and visitors whose options range from moderately priced vacation rentals to luxurious accommodations at Five Diamond resorts. Virtually every type of sport and outdoor activity is within close range at Wailea, with the dry, sunny weather making it possible to participate in golf, tennis, hiking, and water sports the year round. The sandy beaches provide calm waters for swimming, waves for board and body surfing, and enough off-shore wind for wind surfing and kite boarding.

The Shops at Wailea is an attractively designed mall with 70 retail outlets, including fashion boutiques, restaurants, financial institutions, and a variety of services, including a Century 21 All Islands office. Broker-in-Charge Ron Wilson notes that the office serves an international clientele, primarily visitors who recognize the Century 21 brand and stop in to inquire about real estate in the area, whether with the intention to move to Maui or for investment purposes. Realtor Paul Dunn, who works out of the Wailea office and has been active in the Maui real estate market for the past 26 years, is currently listing a beachfront condominium apartment in the Polo Beach Club at $1,695,000.

Dunn and his wife Jeanne, also a Realtor, first visited Maui 35 years ago after living five years in the Middle East working in the field of archaeology and teaching historical geography. “During our years of world travel and then settling in Southern California, I continued to reflect back to my college days when I spent a summer working in Waikiki. I always wanted to return to the Islands. So after three years in Southern California, I convinced Jeanne to make the move,” Dunn said.

“Wailea was still developing at the time and the Polo Beach Club had only recently been built. We were amazed to find an eight-story building right on one of Wailea’s best beaches and with a ground floor unit available. It was 1989 when we moved to Maui and made Polo Beach our home. We arrived with two toddlers, but when our third child was born we moved into a single family home in Wailea. Fortunately, we were able to take advantage of the vacation rental potential, which enabled us to keep the property.

“This Polo Beach Club unit is not only one of the best located in the building, but the best priced for an ocean-view, beachfront. You can literally step off the covered outdoor lanai and onto the powdery sands of Polo Beach. The ocean is rock and coral free here and generally calm. Coral outcroppings on the sides of the beach provide for great snorkeling. In the evening, it’s always a pleasure to sit out on the covered lanai and watch the sunset…with our great Wailea weather, you can actually dine comfortably outdoors most nights.

“This condo is only a few minutes from the Wailea Golf Club with its three championship golf courses and the Wailea Tennis Club, the largest tennis facility on the island. Right on the property is a large oceanfront swimming pool and hot tub with a landscaped deck for lounging and areas for barbecuing and herb gardens. The two-bedroom, two-bath unit’s approximately 1,200 interior square feet are augmented by an additional 180 square feet of lanai space. The main living area and kitchen open to sweeping views of the beach, ocean, and the island of Kahoolawe across the channel. Dunn noted that the unit has an excellent vacation rental history. He is selling it fully furnished and showing it by appointment as well as at open houses when not occupied. Paul and Jeanne Dunn will host open houses at their Polo Beach Club condo Saturday, March 7, through Wednesday, March 11.
