Regional Mall To Open in Kapolei
Ka Makana Alii Center, now under construction at the in tersection of Kapolei and Kualakai Parkways, is the first regional mall to be built on Oahu in more than 30 years and will rank as the state’s third largest shopping center when phase one opens in fall 2016.
The 1.4-million-square-foot development will include approximately 150 shops and restaurants, a movie theater, two hotels and LEED-certified office space. Among the tenants announced to date are the first Macy’s in West Oahu and first Hampton Inn & Suites in Hawaii.
Ka Makana Alii is being developed by a partnership between DeBartolo Development and the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) on a 67-acre parcel leased from DHHL. The project is expected to generate more than $1 billion in revenue over the life of the lease agreement to support the construction of thousands of new homes for DHHL beneficiaries, as well as programs and resources that benefit native Hawaiian interests statewide. The community at large will also benefit from additional employment opportunities, including more than 3,000 construction jobs and 6,500 direct and indirect jobs once the facility is completed.
Rich Hartline, Vice President of Development for DeBartolo Development, said, “Ka Makana Alii will offer residents and visitors a world-class, family-friendly regional shopping center in the heart of Hawaii’s fastest growing community. We envision it as the premier gathering place for the community, complementing existing area attractions and fulfilling the increasing shopping and dining demands of West Oahu. A grand opening is scheduled for the fall. We also plan to develop a community park in the Kanehili neighborhood on Hawaiian Homestead land.”
General Contractor for Ka Makana Alii is Nordic PCL; architectural design is by Architects Hawaii Ltd. JLL Hawaii has been named to manage the center. Colliers International is handling leasing of space, which is still available, but limited.
