Spotlight On Contemporary Island Architecture – Hawaii Loa Ridge
Situated near the top of the Hawaii Loa Ridge development on Ikena Circle is a home that served as the residence of the architect who designed it, as well as several other custom homes in the neighborhood. Tony Ngai, principal of A.K. Ngai, Inc./Architect-Contractor, created a unique indoor-outdoor home that wraps around a private landscaped outdoor area with a large, free form swimming pool. The spacious 3,700 square foot home includes four large bedrooms, five and a half luxurious baths, and main living areas on the lower level that open up with sliding glass doors to the swimming pool and paved outdoor patio.
“This outdoor patio is almost like an extension of the main living area, and ideal for entertaining,” said listing Realtor Dustin Geiger of East Oahu Realty. “The upper level overlooks the pool as well as the ocean and includes a luxurious master suite with two full baths, one with a walk-in shower and the other with a soaking tub with a Diamond Head view. Flooring is primarily Travertine and parts of the house are newly carpeted. Unique features include an elevator from the garage to the main living area and up to the master suite on the second floor. Upgrades include a designer kitchen with top of the line appliances, granite counters, and custom cabinets.”
The structure, has a clean, sleek look with a masonry exterior complemented by a metal roof. The garage provides parking for three cars, and many more can be accommodated in the large, paved driveway.
Geiger considers the listed price of $2,250,000 an especially good value for a house of this quality in the gated Hawaii Loa Ridge community. He is showing the property by appointment.
Architect Tony Ngai
Ngai has stated that every house he designs is unique, both for the site and for the client: “I never design the same house twice…and create an emotional space that one never wants to leave…it is site specific and brings nature into the residence…it brings joy to friends and family who come to visit -and to oneself, of course.”
Tony Ngai is Shanghainese and was born and raised in Hong Kong and Japan. He graduated from St. Joseph’s College, an international school in Yokohama, and then attended Tulane University in Aeronautical/Mechanical Engineering for a year before transferring to the University of California, Berkeley to study architecture.
A builder and a licensed architect for more than 33 years, Ngai was the founder and principal of A.K. Ngai & Associates, Hollywood, California. He later became the Executive Vice President and Director of Computer-Aided Design at Leidenfrost/Horwitz & Associates, a Los Angeles architectural firm which acquired A. K. Ngai & Associates, Inc. in 1985.
In 1990, Ngai again formed his own firm, A. K. Ngai, Architect, specializing in the high-end residential market and commercial interiors. His projects range from ocean front residences in the Bahamas and Mediterranean villas on the Gulf Coast of Florida to contemporary Japanese influenced estates in the hills south of San Francisco to Kahala estates and hilltop residences overlooking the ocean in Hawaii.
