Spotlight On Contemporary Island Architecture – Kahala
Architect Mel Choy is the designer of the unique, oasis-like home at 970 Waiohinu Street in the heart of Kahala. He collaborated closely with the owner on this, their fourth in a series of fine homes. Randall Monaghan, who collaborated with Choy on many award-winning projects, was selected as the landscape architect to provide landscape, hardscape, and water feature design to be integral with the architecture. Locations Realtor Anita Bruhl, who has listed the home for $4,688,000, describes it as a “private, personal resort.”
A practicing architect in Hawaii for the past 40 years and a former principal of Media5, Mel Choy has such projects to his credit as Imiloa Astronomy Education Center, Hilo Judicial Center, One Archer Lane, and Hope Island Resort in Australia.
“Most excellent architectural solutions are a collaboration of the architect, owner and builder, particularly for a very challenging lot bordered by six neighbors. Early on, the discussion centered on a Balinese resort retreat comprising a collection of buildings with integrated landscaping. The site plan for the nearly third-of-an-acre property provides each of the structures a sense of openness and fine craftsmanship.
“The property contains six pavilion-like structures connected by an open loggia to celebrate the openness of the buildings to nature. The rooms, all on one level – a large open living and dining area, three bedrooms, three-anda-half baths, office, family room, and kitchen – overlook gardens. The ‘courtyard’ concept provides security and privacy at the perimeter allowing the pyramid-style pavilions with custom sliding wood doors to remain seamlessly open to the gardens. A heated spa which creates a cascading waterfall spills naturally into a free-form swimming pool resembling a pond. The pool is bordered with natural stone and surrounded by mature tropical trees, including dwarf coco palms, pandanus, and plumeria, as well as flowering plants and ferns. A hidden hot and cold outdoor shower is among the resort style amenities of what I consider the ultimate indoor/outdoor home.
“The ceilings, which are finished with cedar, follow the pyramidal roofline, including the garage. Detailing, door and window framing, baseboards, and cabinetry are custom crafted with African mahogany, complementing the off-white walls and travertine flooring. The kitchen is equipped with high-end stainless steel appliances and storage features. A home theater with state-of-the art equipment and theater-style seating is soundproofed to provide exceptional entertainment without disturbing neighbors. The air conditioned oversize garage with a glass wall on one side, ceramic tile flooring, and teak parking stops overlooks the garden and could be adapted for alternative usage such as an art studio or exercise room.” – Mel Choy AIA, FRAIA
