The Resort Lifestyle – Hana, Maui

homes-4Twentieth in a series

Hana is unique among Hawaii’s resort destinations – a remote rural community with a luxury hotel, private residences ranging from cottages to large estates, and multi-acre ranches. A favorite getaway retreat of Hawaii’s kamaaina, Hana also provides options for visitors ranging from modestly priced vacation rentals to upscale accommodations at the Travaasa Hana resort hotel. Absent are the clusters of condominiums and townhomes characteristic of other Hawaii resorts. Minimally developed and sparsely populated, the verdant Hana countryside is often described as a natural garden.

Nearly a century has passed since kamaaina families built the first homes and established ranches in Hana, but the beauty and tranquility of the setting remains uncompromised. Due to its isolation on the eastern coast of Maui, the environment that attracts retreat-seekers is not likely to change.

The drive from Kahului to Hana on the coastal highway is a scenic two-hour trip, much of it through a rain forest; Hana can also be reached by daily scheduled air service to a small commuter airport three miles northwest of the town. Among the numerous attractions of the area are the nearly 300-acre Kahanu Botanical Gardens and Piilanihale Heiau, one of the largest ancient Hawaiian temples, the seven pools of Oheo Gulch, and the Kipahulu district of Haleakala National Park, which extends from the summit of the crater to the coast. Although most of the dramatically beautiful coastline is rugged, it is notched with several idyllic sandy beaches.

The Travaasa Hana hotel, formerly the iconic Hotel Hana-Maui, has perpetuated the reputation of its predecessor as one of the world’s premier honeymoon destinations and ranks as one of Hawaii’s top resort hotels. Outdoor activity, including horseback riding and hiking, Hawaiian culture, and health and wellness are emphasized in its programs. A swimming pool with a spectacular ocean view and a fine dining restaurant are among the hotel amenities.

According to Island Sotheby’s International Realty Realtor Dan Omer, a member of the Maui community since 1970 and a specialist in rural, ranch, and resort properties, Hana offers some of Hawaii’s best values in oceanfront property, ranches, and country estates, both built-out and vacant land. He is currently listing one of Hana’s premier properties, a three-and-a-half-acre oceanfront estate overlooking a private cove.

The extensively landscaped property includes a 3,000 square foot main house with four bedrooms and four baths, a 1,000 square foot guest house, an outdoor dining pavilion, a swimming pool, greenhouse, and a four-car garage.

“This home occupies the site of an older home built in a choice location by a kamaaina family from Oahu who spent weekends and vacations here,” Omer said. “They were great gardeners, establishing the Asian gardens and starting a collection of rare palms that has been perpetuated by the current owners. The home overlooks the Hana coast with views to the horizon…from the edge of the property you can observe sea turtles in the waters below and whales just off the coast during their seasonal visit to the Islands.

“This is an elegant home designed for indoor/outdoor living and entertaining.

In addition to the guest house, which includes a kitchen, the main house has an attached one bedroom, one bath unit with a private entrance that can accommodate guests or serve as a maid’s quarters, and a den/office.

“The spacious main living/dining area opens to the kitchen and includes a unique feature -a high, recessed ceiling with a specially designed lighting system. The master bedroom extends to a private deck with a hot tub overlooking the ocean. Floor to ceiling sliding glass doors open to lanai, expansive manicured lawn, and the swimming pool…fixed plate glass windows with louvers above for ventilation capture a panoramic view of the ocean. Only the finest and most durable materials were used in construction – stuccoed exterior with Monier tile roofing, tile flooring, and ipe wood decking.

“The entire home is bright and airy, with interior spaces that serve as a showcase for the owner’s extensive art collection, some of which is available for purchase.”

Omer is co-listing the property, priced at $4,700,000, with Sotheby’s International Realty Principal Broker Paul MacLaughlin and showing it by appointment.
