A Haven in the Heights – Makaha Mauna Olu Estates
Homebuilding at Mauna Olu Estates has continued to move forward by starts and stops since the first home-sites were offered for sale in the late 1980s. Currently, 67 homes have been built and three are in various stages of construction in the Makaha Vallley gated community, which consists of 111 one-to-two-acre country-zoned lots.
Accessed from Farrington Highway via Makaha Valley Road and approximately two miles up the valley, the subdivision was a component of the masterplan for Makaha Valley created in the 1960s by developer Chinn Ho who built his own home on an adjacent property. He recognized the area as favored in terms of its natural beauty and climate.
Although Leeward Oahu is generally dryer than other parts of the island, the valley has sufficient rainfall to support vegetation and at the higher elevations can be five to ten degrees cooler than the coast.
Among the appealing features of Mauna Olu are its low density due to the size of the lots and the spectacular views from elevations ranging from approximately 500 to 1,000 feet. With mountains on three sides, the home-sites look out to the ocean and back into the picturesque valley. All have roadway frontage. The infrastructure, with four miles of private roads, is maintained by the Mauna Olu Estates Owners’ Association. Round-the-clock security is provided at the gated entrance to the community.
A variety of recreational opportunities are available in the area, including golf at the Makaha Valley Country Club East Course, an 18 hole public golf course. Sandy beaches, including the world-famous Makaha surfing beach, Turtle Beach with waters generally calm enough for swimming, and Pokai Bay Beach Park are just minutes away. Kapolei with its numerous options for shopping and dining as well as essential services is an approximately half-hour drive.
Milt Piver (RA), a sales agent with the Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties Waikele office and a specialist in Leeward Oahu real estate, has recently listed a custom home on a one-and-a-third-acre lot at Mauna Olu Estates at $1,595,000 (FS). “This home comes with extraordinary panoramic views of the ocean, mountains, golf course, and valley from almost every room. Sunsets are absolutely incredible,” said Piver, who designed and built the home in 2008.
The spacious home with 3,553 square feet of interior living space, augmented by 768 square feet of lanais, is situated on terraced lot at an elevation of 650 feet. The layout was thoughtfully designed by Piver to admit valley and ocean breezes as well as natural light through an abundance of sliding glass doors and large windows.
The two-story, single-family home includes three bedrooms, three-and-a-half baths, and a large, open great room with high ceilings that enhance the sense of spaciousness and integration with the natural landscape.
“You enter the main floor’s 12-foot-tall great room through glass doors that were etched by a local artist, capturing the concept of the ocean’s sea life,” Piver said. “Also on the main floor are a formal dining area, sitting area, a media entertainment center with surround-sound, a wet bar, and access to the large lanai and outdoor dining area.
“The kitchen is a chef’s delight with state-of-the-art appliances, solid cherry wood cabinetry, granite countertops, two pantries, a built-in desk, a breakfast nook, and direct access to the great room and lanai. The large laundry room opens to the three-car garage with storage and ample room for a workshop. There are two large bedrooms and a bathroom on this side of the home; located on the opposite side are the master suite with a sitting area, walk-in closet, access to the lanai, and a large bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub and walk-in shower. The cabinetry is solid cherry wood, and the walls and floor are Travertine. Just outside the master suite is a home office with views of the mountains. In the downstairs area are the family room, a lanai, and full bathroom. Additionally, there are two basement areas, 1,894 square feet of unfinished space and 623 square feet of finished space, that could be converted to extra bedrooms. The home is ideal both for multi-generational living and entertaining guests.”
Piver noted that all rooms have ceiling fans, plus air conditioning in the bedrooms. Bathroom finishes are Travertine marble and ceramic tile. Special decorative lighting, Brazilian Tigerwood flooring, and a central vacuum system are additional amenities of the unique, custom home.
The structure itself is solidly built with exterior siding of HardiePlank and stucco and a double-pitched Monier Tile roof with enclosed eaves and a solar ventilation system. The front yard is walled and gated.
