Apartments Now Available At Kukui Gardens, an affordable housing community in Chinatown
Oahu’s need for affordable housing is dire, and the management team at Kukui Gardens wants to get the word out that they are accepting applications for available 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-bedroom apartments.
Kukui Gardens — located at 1103 Liliha St. between North Vineyard Boulevard and North Beretania — offers affordable housing for individuals, families and seniors with incomes at 60-percent or below the area median income (AMI) as established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Conveniently located near the central business district and Chinatown, Kukui Gardens is adjacent to the Beretania Community Park, which features basketball and volleyball courts, a softball field, a recreation center and grassy areas. Shopping, entertainment and public transportation are nearby.
The world-renowned architect, Cesar Pelli, designed Kukui Gardens in 1970. He was known for his spectacular skyscrapers and iconic designs in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and other major cities around the world. In 1991, he was named one of the 10 most influential living American architects by the American Institute of Architects.
While Kukui Gardens turns 50 years old next year, recent renovations included new walkways and roofs, improved lighting, and more trees and landscaping. The apartments have new flooring, new kitchen cabinet doors, and fresh paint. Each apartment includes an electric stove, range hood, refrigerator and garbage disposal. Additional building amenities include on-site laundry facilities, parking, and a resident management and maintenance staff.
Currently, a 1-bedroom rents for $1,239 per month. To qualify, the household’s gross annual income may not exceed the maximum income limit per household size. For example, a one-person household can have a gross annual income up to $50,640 to qualify. There is also a minimum income requirement.
