Leeward Options – Makaha

The four condominium residences built along the Makaha coast between the late 1960s and mid 1970s – Hawaiian Princess, Makaha Shores, Makaha Beach Cabanas, and Makaha Surfside -as well as Makaha Towers and Makaha Valley Plantation in the valley, were developed as a component of a masterplan for Leeward Oahu’s first resort/residential community. The original vision for Makaha continues to evolve with new residential and resort properties, on the coast, in the valley, and on the hillsides.

The approximately 828 units comprised in the four oceanfront condominium properties were eventually sold out to a mix of local and out-of-state buyers that included owner/occupants, second home buyers, and investors. Most have been maintained in good condition and retained their value, some to a greater degree than others due to periodic upgrading. The Makaha Shores, in particular, has recently undergone significant renovation with resurfacing of the concrete exterior, lanais, and parking areas. Comprised of 88 two-bedroom, one-bedroom, and studio units, the building includes a recreation deck with a large heated swimming pool, lounging and barbecue area, bike racks, covered and uncovered parking with one assigned space for each unit, an elevator, and an overnight security guard on the premises. Built in 1967, the six-story condominium residence occupies the premier site on the Makaha coast, the famous Makaha surfing beach; the other three condo towers are located to the south on Lahilahi Beach.

Coldwell Banker Pacific Properties Realtor Leon Mosher, who has specialized in Makaha condos over the years, considers the Makaha Shores the best value on the oceanfront, both due to its choice location and the amenities of the building. He has personally invested in units in the Makaha Shores and is currently offering a studio apartment with a direct ocean view. “This is a large studio with 323 interior square feet and an 82-square-foot lanai,” Mosher said. “The unit has been completely remodeled and features an open floor plan with ceramic tile flooring throughout. No closed off galley kitchen as in the original layout, but a functional well designed eat-in kitchen with Corian countertops, newer appliances, and maple cabinetry. Because of the open floor plan, the main living area captures the ocean view out over the large lanai, where you overlook a panorama of ocean, coastline, and amazing sunsets. Right out front is one of Hawaii’s best surfing beaches. Turtles, dolphins, and whales also frequent the clear waters.”

Mosher noted that this second floor studio is also well located in the building with just half a flight of stairs to the top deck parking area where the unit’s assigned space is located.
